Prof. Mohan Bikram Gewali's

Aspects of Traditional Medicine in Nepal

This book aims to introduce basic tenets of the traditional medical system of Nepal. It is intended for the general readers, students and anybody who is interested in Nepali traditional medicine and medicinal plant resources. Written in a simple language and lucid way, it contains four chapters. The first chapter describes the status of existing traditional medicines such as Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Tibetan, Unani, Folk and Shamanistic medicines. The second chapter is devoted to the study of Nepali medicinal plants from the perspectives of utilization, conservation, cultivation, trade and sustainable use. To illustrate the importance of the folk medicines, the third chapter deciphers interesting biological properties and chemical structure diversity in the folk medicines practiced in Manang district of Nepal. The final chapter looks into lingering issues on the safe and effective use of the traditional medicines. Furthermore, the chapter includes the author’s down to earth suggestions for the sustainable development of the medicinal plant resources in Nepal.

  1. I was most pleased to see this interesting and educative addition to the library of natural medicines, especially as it relates to Nepal. My only suggestions (and I very well realise that such recommendations are easy to make; but it is, of course, natural that once an edition is out, it is easier to make improvements in later editions) are the following: 1) pictures to complement natural herb names; 2) additional districts (slowly, slowly, perhaps 2-3 per new edition :) ) because there are districts besides Manang with peculiarities in this field. I again offer my sincere congratulations to Professor Gewali for this excellent volume.

  19. Dear Gewali sir and Suresh,

First of all I'd like to congratulate the authors for their nice effort. There was (or may still be) scarcity of these types of books in Nepal because these types of books in general won't make money (like +2 books and guides) but saves and organize our traditional knowledge and culture of medicines that has no side effect as well as has not explored much in the light of modern science (my personal view, may have been done enough in India). But readers are always demanding and voracious. The second chapter is covering a lot of information without any picture (it is not only costly, but also needs lots of time too to collect them). I also feel that if I can read English and Nepali names beside scientific names in plant index. This also gives flexibility to authors for having only scientific names in the text. ( I have seen such list of some medicinally important compounds in the books (unfortunately I don't remember the names now) that I found in the library of then ministry of forest situated in Babarmahal). It is easy to and very difficult to satisfy. I deeply appreciate the tough efforts of authors from my heart and looking forward more contribution.

I urge readers if they can help the authors with information and more pictures to make later edition of this book more precious (unfortunately I don't have any right now).

    Regards,
    Sunil
